DU School Writing Contests

INTRODUCING A NEW writing CONTEST

FOR EVERYONE IN yOUR SCHOOL...

INCLUDING THE TEACHERS!

THE du schools writing contest

an international contest that WILL EXCITE AND UNITE YOUR SCHOOL

AS YOU COMPETE AGAINST OTHER SCHOOLS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

wHY INVOLVE OUR SCHOOL?

1. It’s inspirational

Daily-Update Publishers established this contest as a way to involve the entire school, including teachers, in a challenging multi-media project. It will be one of the most exciting things you’ve ever involved your school in. Your school will have to unite to produce the spectacular results necessary. The contest is a wonderful way to build up both pride in your school and a variety of skills. Students will be inspired as they discover the power of the word and image.

2. It’s memorable

Imagine you are a student. Suddenly you find yourself in a team with younger and older schoolmates, as well as teachers. Your team has a well-defined task and a definite deadline. Your school is counting on your team to produce something of world class. You will have to complement each other’s talents and abilities. However, it’s not enough to use all your knowledge, experience and energy. You must also quickly acquire new skills and utilize them. You will remember forever the thrill as you, your team and your school rose to the challenge.

3. It’s motivational

Teammates will be encouraging each other. Students and teachers will be working towards a common goal. Students will be called upon to learn rapidly and apply new knowledge immediately. Your school is competing against schools from around the world. The tasks are challenging. The quality of the finished work will astound the many individual minds that produced it. Winning schools win a prize and are also published. How can this huge project be anything other than motivational?

4. It’s educational

The motivated teams of students and teachers work on the various tasks involved in the project, including:

Management - Students can be guided to set their activities and timetables; plan resource acquisition; direct and control their own work; keep to limits (including word count, overall file size and time); and make quick yet informed decisions.

Historical research - The topic set for both primary schools and secondary schools
is to write and illustrate a historical tale set in their own country. Each school is to find and incorporate aspects of the national history that are not widely known in other countries. The contest book/s will be filled with fascinating historical tales from around the world.

Creative writing - The students are not required to write pure history. It is a historical tale, a shorter version of the historical novel. They are allowed considerable artistic licence, although the main historical facts in the story should be fairly accurate.

Editorial work - There is a great deal of editorial work to be done. Students will become more familiar with word processing, layout and design software. They will challenge themselves to achieve aesthetically pleasing effects and to profound and startling statements. They will also carefully proof-read all their work. Finally, they must cite all historical sources (to demonstrate reasonable historical accuracy) and provide a bibliography.

Visual arts - This contest is a wonderful opportunity to teach and experiment with all kinds of visual arts, including sketching, painting, computer-aided design and rendering, sculpture and photography. All artwork must be the original work of the students and teachers.

Technology - Computers will play an important role in this multi-media project. As mentioned, students will computer software for illustrations, word processing, layouts, editing and initial proof-reading. They may also use software for management, record-keeping and research. Then they will need to learn how to digitize the whole project (it will preferably be submitted as a computer file). The images will need to be of sufficiently high resolution for publishing (in case the school ends up one of the winners). At the same time, there is a limit on the overall file size, so students will have to learn about optimization. We’d suggest that you try for the best quality first, save a copy, then optimize as needed to come within the file limit.

Published anthology -  The schools that are awarded first, second or third place, or receive an honourable mention, will have their works published in one or two anthologies by Daily-Update Publishers. These books are expected to be both enjoyable and educational, containing as they will rich and absorbing historical tales from around the globe.

WHAT ARE THE BASIC DETAILS?

There are two levels: primary/ elementary schools and secondary/ high schools. The topic and rules are the same for each level.

Schools that are awarded an honourable mention or come first, second or third will have their work published by Daily-Update Publishers. They will also win a prize (see the top of the page).
