The Book
The main focus of this workbook is upon phonics, particularly long vowels, blends, digraphs and syllables, although students also learn spelling, reading and expression of ideas, among other things. The aim of this book is to learn the sounds and apply them in writing, reading and speaking. Students learn not only to sound out words, but to understand their meanings. Understanding is demonstrated through drawings, definitions, short answers, puzzles, and sentence construction. The knowledge of short vowels is applied in songs, physical responses, picture identification, word association and other activities.
There are periodic reviews that quickly go over past material then test listening ability. Amusing poems demonstrate particular sounds and are also used for review. Conceptual thinking and writing are developed as students proceed through the book.

The “Backbone Books” series develops general English ability at all levels, from kindergarten to the end of Senior High. You can supplement the core Backbone books with specific skills from the “Build Up Books” series as and when your class needs them.
